The above video of cocoa farmers in Ivory Coast tasting chocolate for the first time has been making its rounds, and, in fact, has been pointed out to me about eleventy thousand times already. (Seriously, thanks for thinking of me folks; I’m not complaining.)
Like the reporter in the video, I traveled to Ivory Coast to meet farmers and lugged along some chocolate. I assumed they had never eaten chocolate too and that I would blow their taste buds with Hershey bars and Hershey kisses.
I assumed wrong.

Each year I get invited to speak at 20 to 30 universities across the country about my travels and my books, which are regularly selected as the common reading books that all incoming freshmen are supposed to read. And each year there is one question that freshmen women who are still with their high school boyfriends want me to answer:

I’m not sure I’ve seen a better looking group of folks than the University of Kentucky’s K-Crew, holding up copies of Where Am I Wearing? They’re using WEARING as a common reader this fall.
You write and you write and you write. You have so many insecurities and questions.
“Is anyone else ever going to read this?”
“Will I allow anyone else to read this?”
Deep down you think that just maybe this book that you’ve slaved away at might be something. You go to the Midwest Writers Conference. You learn to pitch an agent. You pitch one agent and then another agent, and before it’s all said and done EVERY agent at the conference is interested in your book!
Right when this sinks in, I stick a camera in your face.
As reported in the LA Times (!!!!), I’ll be speaking at the Green Festival today alongside Chris Yura of Sustain U. So, if you are in the area, stop in. You can come for free. Just tell them at the entrance that you are one of the speaker’s guests and then tell them you are my guest at the registration table.

Central American migrants ride atop trains to make a better life for their families in the United States. In some places, the locals are sick of the migrants and throw rocks at them, in others they throw bread. The women in this video are throwing bread and they rock.
So thankful people like this helped my friend Amilcar on his three month journey.
